A protest over the Thomastown Culvert works had to be averted today.
16 weeks of repairs are due to start on March 1 & some concern has been expressed by those working & living in the area – they’re worried about possible disruptions to business in the area.
The council’s area office held a public drop-in information session where the plans could be viewed & discussed.
A two-hour public meeting took place – Cllr Breda Gardner was there & told KCLR News that questions were asked. She said “the big question that was top of the agenda was ‘Can you do night-time work?'”
She says “It went around & around and the gist of it is that the people of Thomastown were saying that they’re greatly affected, 40% of their income went down when they had road works done before in Thomastown. So they said that if they don’t do the night-time work they’re going to protest”.
Cllr Gardner adds “they even called me out of the room after they had left and said they wanted to protest there & then. I said let’s give the council, let’s give the contractors a chance to come back & see what they can do”.
Another meeting is due to take place next week.
