Tullaroan and Mullinavat both picked up wins in last night’s Kilkenny Senior Hurling League.
Mullinavat were 2-17 to 0-13 winners over Bennettsbridge, while Tullaroan recorded a comfortable 3-18 to 1-11 victory over Erins Own.
That makes it three wins from four for Tullaroan, who continue to impress under manager Davy Mulcahy.
Mulcahy, who many will know from his successful career in professional soccer, admits taking charge of a senior hurling team was a major challenge, but says the players have bought into his approach.
“It’s a huge task for me. It was obviously a big risk on Tullaroan’s side and a big risk on my side.
“I was sure I could do something different here. I knew the players were here. Just bringing a different element to what they were doing before, and the boys are buying into it at the training ground. The boys are hurling with freedom.”
Mulcahy is no stranger to elite sport, having enjoyed a long and successful League of Ireland career with St Patrick’s Athletic, Cork City, Shelbourne and Bohemians.
He is also the most decorated Kilkenny player in League of Ireland history, and became the first Irish player to score at the redeveloped Lansdowne Road in 2010 when he found the net for a League of Ireland XI against Manchester United.
City Rivalry Next For Tullaroan
Tullaroan’s next assignment will be against O’Loughlin Gaels, adding an interesting subplot given Mulcahy’s background with James Stephens.
Mulcahy will also be working alongside O’Loughlin Gaels boss Brian Hogan at county level, with Hogan recently appointed Kilkenny Under-20 manager, while Mulcahy has been included in Henry Shefflin’s Kilkenny senior management team.
For now, though, the focus is firmly on Tullaroan, who have made an excellent start to their senior league campaign and will be hoping their run of form continues.
