Tougher action on anti-social behaviour’s been called for in Kilkenny city centre.
The municipal district meeting heard one Independent Councillor’s concerns about people cycling e-scooters and bicycles on footpaths with claims pedestrians and tourists are being intimidated on High Street.
Stronger action against what was described as organised begging was also sought with Gardaí urged to adopt a zero tolerance approach to protect businesses, shoppers and the city’s tourism reputation.
Cllr Eugene McGuinness believes Gardaí need more personnel but he wants action on those who flout the law, telling KCLR News; “We know the resources are not there, the gardaí are not going to say that but I’ll say it and I’ve been continuously saying it, we need more guards on the street, it’s very difficult for a guard to be in every place at every time but I can tell you if the guards are patrolling High Street and they see this activity I want it stopped and I want it stopped immediately, it is totally and utterly unacceptable”.
