Two new walking trails, the ‘Wonder Wander’ trails, were officially launched in Freshford and Castlecomer by Kilkenny County Council Cathaoirleach, Michael McCarthy.
The trails, developed in partnership with the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, the Architectural Conservation Office, and the local community, offer a unique opportunity to explore the rich architectural heritage of these areas.
The ‘Wonder Wander’ trails are the first of their kind in the region, designed to highlight the historic buildings and landscapes of the towns. Local Councillor Pat Fitzpatrick expressed optimism that the initiative would serve as a model for future heritage trails across the county, benefiting schools and attracting visitors.
The trails feature informative signage and interactive maps, allowing visitors to learn about the history and architectural significance of key sites. McCarthy emphasized that the project contributes to Kilkenny’s commitment to preserving its heritage while supporting sustainable tourism.
With plans for similar trails to be developed in the future, the ‘Wonder Wander’ initiative is seen as a vital step in connecting the past with the present and boosting local tourism.
