This week’s Glanbia Farm Show celebrated National Potato Day (2nd October) in a discussion with South Kilkenny potato grower Eddie Doyle. Eddie spoke of the cooking versatility of the potato and how astute marketing by an Bord Bia has brought new awareness of the importance of the potato in the diet.
Paul Horan, Assistant Professor of Nursing at Trinity College Dublin, and Michael Somers of Teagasc outlined an upcoming series of webinars focusing on the physical and mental health of the rural and farming community. The seminars, involving personalities including Nicky Brennan and Anna May McHugh, will be broadcast later this month.
Aidan Brennan of Teagasc advised farmers on how to manage grass this Autumn to ensure that there is both quality and quantity of grass for grazing early next Spring. Aidan also highlighted upcoming closing dates for slurry and FYM spreading as well as the need to fence off watercourses and ensure that no runoff from roadways gets into watercourses.
Eric Driver manager of Tullow Mart gave an update on this week’s livestock prices as did George Candler of Cillin Hill mart. George also noted the passing of Michael Casey and highlighted the late Department of Agriculture official’s influence on farmers and agriculture in the area as well as his devotion to drama activities.
