40 instances relating to the Child Care Act were investigated by local Gardaí in 2013 and 2014.
The figures are contained in the annual report from an Garda Síochána which shows that there was a significant decrease in the amount of reports between the two years.
In 2013 there were 29 reports made to Gardaí in Carlow and Kilkenny of breaches of the Child Care Act 1991.
Under the terms of this act a child can be removed from their parents or guardians if they believe there is an immediate danger to the child.
In 2014 this number was down to 11 – a decrease of 62%.
Nationally there were 728 children identified under this act in 2013 – down to 549 the year after.
In separate statistics, the report from An Garda Síochána also shows that there were 183 missing persons reports made in the Carlow/Kilkenny district in 2014.
143 of these were deemed ‘High Risk’. However, all of these were subsequently found.
