The Taoiseach says tougher action on e-scooters could follow if users fail to obey the rules.
It comes as the Government yesterday banned e-scooters for under-18s and said a licensing system will be introduced later this year.
Its as a Kilkenny Roads Policing Unit seized an e-scooter on John Street over the weekend after its rider was allegedly carrying a child passenger and large bags on the handlebars.
Fixed charge notices were issued, and a referral has been made to Tusla.
Junior Transport Minister Sean Canney says new laws will be introduced in September and the issue of insurance will have to be examined:
“It’s part of what we’re looking at at the moment, whether insurance will probably have to be part of that and also we’ll have to look at how that can be can be implemented.”
“We’ll be looking at that, we’ll be bringing legislation forward that I’ve ready for other parts of the driver vehicle bill which will be coming in in September and I intend to add this piece of legislation.”
