Controlled explosion carried out on suspect device in a Carlow dance school

Staff, students and parents were evacuated from a Carlow Dance School yesterday evening while a suspect device was made safe.

The Bomb disposal team was deployed on the request of Gardaí who were called to the Ballet Barn in Kilmeaney.

It’s understood the incident had no connection whatsoever to the dance school but that the device was contained in a package that had been delivered to someone who happened to be going to the school yesterday evening where ballet exams were due to take place.

The Army Bomb Disposal team arrived on scene at 5.00pm and identified a complex viable improvised explosive device that was made safe at the scene in the car park through a controlled explosion.

The scene was declared safe at 6pm.

The remains of the device have been removed to a secure military location for further exploitation.

A statement from the Defence Forces  says any material with an “evidential value” will be handed over to the Gardaí to aid in their investigations.
