Program 1 – History & Geology of the River Nore

In this program we explore the history of settlement along the river and focus in particular on the monks who brought their expertise in building mill streams and mills to the city of Kilkenny. Their activity brought economic wealth that enabled the population to grow and expand and attract more business. However building near a river can come with disadvantages, especially during a flood and the program goes on to outline some of the more devastating floods on the Nore. In this first program we hear from historian Paddy Neary and Pat Boyd, Thomastown fisherman Bob Wemyss and Tim Joyce, Civil Engineer from the OPW who was involved in the Kilkenny City Flood Relief scheme.
