Two of the country’s main political parties, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, are expected to agree their respective positions today on who should become the next Ceann Comhairle of the Dáil.
The Chairperson of the lower house of the Oireachtas is elected by peers, with that due to take place tomorrow.
Kildare South’s Seán Ó Fearghaíl is bidding for a third term in the role, joined in the race by his fellow Fianna Fáil colleagues John McGuinness from Carlow Kilkenny and Cork’s Michael Moynihan.
Sinn Féin’s Aengus O Snodaigh is set to be on the ballot too with Verona Murphy from Wexford the proposed candidate by the Regional Independent Group, who the larger parties may be relying on to form the next Government.
