The Green Party has confirmed that a former Junior Minister and Carlow Kilkenny TD has been chosen as a candidate for the Agricultural Panel of the Seanad.
Just weeks after the General Election, the focus now is on who will take the 60 seats at the table of the Upper House of the Oireachtas.
But the voting procedure is a little different – the general public doesn’t get to have a say, instead that falls to a mix of panels of candidates representing specific interests who will elect 43 with six others elected by graduates of certain universities and the Taoiseach will nominate 11 others.
In a statement Mr Noonan says; “I am honoured to be chosen to represent the Green Party and this election is an important step in rebuilding the Party. As Minister, I helped deliver a transformative agenda for Ireland’s natural environment, built heritage and electoral systems. I am running for the Seanad to continue this work because the need for climate action and nature restoration is as important as ever.”
It’s understood Kilkenny Councillor Pat Fitzpatrick too is bidding for a seat with the Agri Panel, his County Council Fine Gael counterpart David Fitzgerald also understood to be aiming for a senate seat while former Environmental Awareness Officer with Kilkenny County Council Sadhbh O’Neill is one of 16 hopefuls in the University of Dublin constituency.
