A fresh application to develop a 24-hour motorway service area off the M9 at Mullinavat has been submitted to Kilkenny County Council.
Petrogas Group Ltd wishes to install six general vehicle fuel pump islands, HGV fuel pumps and 20 electric vehicle charging points on a site off the R704 at Garrandarragh, along with 63 standard car parking spaces, four accessible spaces, three coach spaces and 14 HGV parking spaces.
The applicant proposes to construct a main building with floor space coming in at just over thousand square metres, including a retail convenience store, an off-licence, two food outlets – one of which will be a drive through – toilets, storage and office spaces.
The site for the proposed development was previously used as a temporary construction compound during the construction of the nearby M9.
A site characterisation report prepared by Rowan Engineering Consultants noted that “a logging company (had) also previously utilised the area to store and stockpile timber. The site has since been cleared of all equipment and materials and has been left vacant to date”.
