The funeral will take place this afternoon for one of the Carlow teenagers killed in Sunday’s M9 crash.
16-year-old Alex McCarthy died with four others after the car they were travelling in drove the wrong way on the motorway and struck another car with a family also from our locality, leaving all four of its occupants seriously injured in various hospitals.
Alex’s family and friends are due at The Holy Family Church in Askea for Requiem Mass at 3 o’clock this afternoon after which he’ll be buried in St Mary’s Cemetery.

A fundraiser for sisters Ella Hendricken, Niamh Kinsella, Alma Kinsella and their younger family member has this morning raised more than €600,000 while a Vigil will take place this evening from 6:30pm at St Clare’s Church, Graiguecullen. Meanwhile, The State is being accused of having responsibility in the crash after Tusla confirmed one of the teenagers who died was in its care
Aontú is describing it as “shocking,” saying over 200 children have died in the agency’s care or known to Tusla in the last 10 years.
And the calls continue for social media companies to be held accountable for glorifying illegal activities including driving the wrong way on motorways.
TikTok has reportedly refused to appear before the Oireachtas Media Committee to face questions after the above incident.
