Gardaí are rolling out a major road safety campaign this weekend, focusing on drink and drug driving.
New figures show that one motorist has been caught driving under the influence every hour so far this year.
With the bank holiday weekend expected to be one of the busiest on the roads, Gardaí are stepping up checkpoints and roadside testing.
33 people have died so far on Irish roads this year, a number of them in our locality.
Speaking to KCLR News Divisional Roads Policing Inspector Paul Donohoe warned; “We’ve increased our checkpoints across the bank holiday weekend now by 50%, we’re bringing members in on overtime and everything else so we’re going to put a big push on and doing checkpoints to ensure people are not drink and driving and we’ll be doing a lot of speed checks also”.
