The Republic of Ireland will be in Thursday’s draw for the World Cup play-offs following a remarkable 3-2 victory over Hungary in their final group game in Budapest.
Troy Parrott was the headline act once again, completing a hat-trick and scoring the decisive goal in the 96th minute. His late strike secured all three points and capped off an outstanding week for the striker, who also netted twice against Portugal last Thursday.
Ireland trailed during stages of the game but showed resilience throughout, with Parrott’s finishing ultimately proving the difference as the Boys in Green claimed a famous away win.
The play-offs will take place next March, and former Ireland winger Kevin Kilbane told KCLR that Parrott’s form has lifted the entire fan base.
“I can’t even describe how we’re all feeling towards him as Irish fans now,” Kilbane said. “I think it’s probably the best week any individual player will ever have had in an Irish jersey. Five goals, a hat-trick, amazing, just absolutely incredible.”
More reaction from Kevin Kilbane, Keith Treacy, Kevin Doherty, Stephen Finn, Heimir Hallgrímsson, Troy Parrott and Jayson Molumby is available now on the KCLR Sport podcast.
