Speaking to KCLR Sport after the match, Bohemians hat-trick scorer Colm Whelan described the victory as a full-circle moment, scoring against his former club, Waterford FC.
“I had a great four years in Waterford Academy and it was an amazing time. I’m used to scoring on this pitch so I was happy to do it again”.
Leading by three goals at halftime, Whelan spoke about the team’s focus on maintaining their performance and closing out the match.
“We knew we had a three-goal lead so we just had to work in our units, keep a clean sheet and we knew we’d win the game”.
The former Thomastown United player also reflected on the triumphs and hardships he’s faced in recent years and his determination to keep going, fueled by the encouragement of his family.
During his time at UCD, the Kilkenny native scored a total of 44 goals across all competitions, placing him fifth on the club’s all-time top scorers list. His impressive contributions were instrumental in UCD’s promotion to the Premier Division.
After leaving UCD, Whelan continued his career with Derry City. In May 2022, he suffered an ACL injury which forced him to miss out on a season. Just two weeks after his return in May 2023 he suffered another ACL injury, his second in the space of 12 months.
“Last couple of years were really, really tough but it’s for moments like this that you stay fighting. Especially when your family is there with you and telling you that these are the moments that are going to come”.
Bohemians will take on St Patrick’s Athletic in the next round of the league this Friday, March 14th, at Richmond Park.
