Kilkenny Ladies Gaelic Football continues to build momentum across the county, with growing participation numbers, increased investment in player welfare and a significant upcoming milestone for the senior team.

The county’s senior ladies footballers have been competing since January across the National League, the TG4 Leinster Championship and the All-Ireland series, with a young squad continuing to gain valuable experience at inter-county level.

While results have not always reflected the effort being put in behind the scenes, those involved say the commitment from the players has been unwavering.

Kilkenny LGFA Chairperson Mark Flynn said one of the key priorities this year has been ensuring that ladies football receives greater visibility and recognition across the county.

Despite the challenges of crossover between sports and managing a youthful panel, the senior squad has maintained a demanding training schedule, typically training three times a week when not playing and twice weekly during match weeks.

Significant structures have also been introduced around the senior setup in 2026. The management team now includes coaching, strength and conditioning, nutrition, sports psychology and sports therapy support.

Players are also using GPS tracking technology similar to that used in professional football, allowing coaches to monitor workloads and performance levels throughout the season. In addition, the squad uses player welfare software to track wellbeing, recovery and nutrition.

Off the field, Kilkenny LGFA has secured independent local sponsorship backing both underage and adult inter-county teams, helping to support the continued development of the game.

One of the biggest achievements of the year so far will come on June 14th when Kilkenny’s senior ladies footballers play Offaly in UPMC Nowlan Park, with county officials viewing the fixture as a landmark occasion and an important moment in raising the profile of ladies football within Kilkenny.

Participation numbers across the county also continue to rise. Kilkenny LGFA now has 17 clubs, with five of those established within the last 12 months. There are currently 15 Gaelic4Mothers&Others teams involving approximately 250 players, while adult competitive football numbers stand at 189. Across all age grades from under-6 to under-18, there are an estimated 1,350 registered players involved in the sport.

The growth reflects increasing interest in ladies football throughout the county, with officials hopeful that continued investment, visibility and participation will help drive the game forward in the years ahead.
