Most local nursing homes charge more than Fair Deal fees

The majority of local nursing homes apply aditional charges on top of their fees charged through the Fair Deal Scheme.

Fair Deal is a nursing home support scheme introduced back in 2008 to help older people finance their nursing home care.

An investigation into whats charged in more than 300 nursing homes in Ireland has been conducted by the Sunday Independent and the results are published today.

13 local nursing homes -6 in Carlow and 7 in Kilkenny are listed with details of their charges per week for Fair Deal and any extra charges that apply either monthly or weekly.

The average weekly fee for Fair Deal in Carlow nursing homes is 860 euro and 886 euro in Kilkenny.

Extra charges in those facilities ranges from an additional 2 euro per day to an extra 150 euro per month according to the survey.
