Local woman says the Department of Psychiatry is like a revolving door and something needs to change

Talk-therapy is what’s badly needed but lacking in our mental health services, according to one service user.

Julie, from Kilkenny, says she had to beg for therapy after she was eventually diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 34.

She’s been in and out of the Department of Psychiatry of St Luke’s Hospital – where at one stage she says she spent the best part of 3 years being sedated there instead of being offered therapy.

Speaking on KCLR Live today, Julie says the same people are showing up for help at the DOP time and time again, describing it as just a “revolving door”.
