Operators of a circus that was in Kilkenny over the weekend have agreed to repair and reseed the ground they used.
There was uproar locally at the state of the green area at The Closh in the city when the performers pulled out.
Cllr Andrew McGuinness on social media sites said while the county council’s been in contact with those responsible and a resolution appears to have been found, he felt further action was needed.
However, speaking to KCLR News this morning he said; “The circus at The Closh proved to be a fantastic addition in terms of the entertainment value but there was some damage left behind them in terms of the actual green area being dug up and unfortunately with the bad weather the ground was softened and with the heavy vehicles it really did dig up that area and there was an issue with sewerage but to be fair to the circus operators and St Patrick’s Day Festival committee and Kilkenny County Council they did respond quickly”.
He adds “I made the complaints as soon as they were brought to my attention, they responded fast and the circus provider has agreed to repair the ground, reseed the grass and make good of any mess that was left behind and they did deal with the sewerage issue quickly as well and they cleaned that up”.
Cllr McGuinness also says; “I was angry when I saw it first but I’m happy that there was a positive reaction and a positive result, I’d hate to tarnish the festival, a really, really good weekend in Kilkenny, with that issue so I just want to say I’m happy that they’re dealing with that appropriately”.
Such a reaction’s important for the future of such events as Cllr McGuinness notes; “Sometimes as public representatives we tend to react quickly and I will admit I was angry when I saw the condition that The Closh was left in and I was angry for the residents because there’s a great community over there but I will say that they responded positively and quickly and overall it was a really positive event and the festivities in Kilkenny over the weekend are something we should all be exceptionally proud of”.
