Carlow’s Mayor says a row sparked over the Mayoral Chain has now been “put to bed”.
Paul Doogue says he appreciated Councillor Fergal Browne apologising during their recent monthly meeting, describing the discussion as calm and respectful.
While some councillors felt the debate on Mayor Doogues motion to retire the chain to the Museum was a waste of time, he rejected that criticism, saying there were no other major issues raised during the remainder of the meeting.
Mayor Doogue told KCLR News’ Martin Quilty that it was important his motion was on the agenda, saying; “It’s worth ten minutes debate, it is a democratic right for me as the Mayor of Carlow to bring up this and represent the people of Carlow, I don’t represent the councillors themselves, I represent the people of Carlow, I am disappointed I didn’t get more support I’ll be honest because I thought people would think more of the history of the people that did wear that chain, that chain was representing the people”.
Reminder of what sparked the initial discussion here.
