Only 20 properties were available to rent within HAP limits across 16 areas surveyed in June.
The latest Locked Out of the Market report from the Simon Communities found just over 1,300 properties available to rent at any price across those areas over three survey dates.
That’s an increase of 22% on March this year, and 33% higher than in June last year.
Simon’s Executive Director Ber Grogan says despite the improved availability its still not good enough for a wealthy nation. “Ireland has a key leadership time holding the EU Presidency, we are being looked at across Europe, we are a rich country, there’s a lot of wealth, there’s absolutely no need for us to continue to create this inequality and if the Government want to get a handle on the continuously rising monthly homeless figures then HAP is one of those levers that they need to address and they need to fix and they need to do it urgently”.
