An Orange weather warning for snow and ice has been issued for Carlow and Kilkenny, to take effect from 5pm on Saturday evening for a period of 24 hours.
Parts of Carlow and Kilkenny plummeted to -5 degrees overnight, with further cold weather expected over the weekend.
A nationwide status yellow low temperature and ice warning came into effect yesterday evening at 6pm, and ended at 11am, though a weather advisory for sleet and snow will kick in at midnight tonight (Friday).
People are advised to take all necessary precautions when travelling, and to check in on older relatives and friends, and those who may be vulnerable during the cold weather snap.
Speaking to KCLR News, Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather said that it is hard to predict where sleet and snowfall may appear over the weekend, though higher areas are the most at risk.
“Tomorrow, we will see rain push up from the South, now as that meets the colder air it will turn to sleet and snow in some areas”, he noted, though “its very hard to pinpoint where that will fall as sleet and snow, but high ground in Carlow and Kilkenny is at highest risk, and Kilkenny moreso than Carlow.”
He also noted that the Blackstairs in Carlow were at highest risk of seeing some sleet and snow.
