Talking Movies: Starred Up and Labor Day

Starred Up (starring Jack O’Connell) and Labor Day (starring Kate Winslet) were both reviewed on the show last week by Ken McGuire and Eoghan Dalton.

The first is a grim prison drama where violent young offender Eric Love (O’Connell) finds himself in the same prison block as his father (Ben Mendelsohn), who wants to make sure his son doesn’t let his anger lead him to an early demise. It’s a career making role for O’Connell (previously of UK drama Skins), who brings an impressive ferocity and vulnerability to the film.

Labor Day, meanwhile, has Winslet and her son coerced by escaped convict Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men) into taking him in for a night. It’s Juno director Jason Reitman’s latest movie.
