Waterways Woes & Heroes
The Summer’s here and many have been taking to local waters.
We’ve had a number of recent rescues from rivers in Carlow and Kilkenny with one local hero Miley Doran invited to Áras an Uachtarán for the role he played saving a duo (read about that here).
Earlier this week we heard of another near-miss for a mother and daughter on KCLR Live with Eimear Ní Bhraonáin.
She was joined by Lauren Molloy who was involved in that incident as well as Clifford Reid of boattrips.ie …
People of Politics
Around this time of year, the municipal districts and county councils of Carlow and Kilkenny set their figureheads for the year ahead.
Kilkenny County Council announced its Cathaoirleach and Leas Cathaoirleach on Friday evening (that’s here) following Carlow County Council’s decision reveal (here), while Andrew McGuinness was recently named Mayor of Kilkenny, and Carlow Town named somebody in that role too (here). Chairs too in the areas of Tullow (here) and Bagenalstown (here) with Michael Doyle heading up Callan Thomastown aided by Joe Lyons and Pat Dunphy in the top role for Piltown, assisted by Fidelis Doherty. Castlecomer will name its on Monday.
Meanwhile, former Kilkenny Mayor Marie Fitzpatrick turned 70 years old this week and Sue Nunn caught up with her on The Way It Is to talk about her time with the council, the current Covid pandemic and more, including some interesting insight into international trips where a certain former European Commissioner was part of the travelling group …

Mother and Baby Homes
Mary Dunlevy & Maureen O’Sullivan joined Eimear Ní Bhraonáin in studio this week to tell on KCLR Live of the committee they formed to have unmarked graves recognised in Carlow.
Both women are survivors of Irish institutions and are encouraging people to contact them if they have any information about unmarked graves in the area.
Mary shared her heartbreaking story of being sent to an industrial school at the age of three where she remained until the age of 18.
Talent Takeover
Super talented singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ali Comerford joined our Sue Nunn in studio for The Way It Is to talk about moving home after travelling the world as well as her new songs and music career …

Funding Fare
Carlow and Kilkenny groups received considerable funding under various schemes this week.
There were allocations for museums (here), additional outdoor infrastructure (here), community monuments (here) and live gigs (here).
One of the beneficiaries of the latter is Cleere’s Bar & Theatre – it’s Johnny Holden spoke with our Eimear Ní Bhraonáin on KCLR Live …
