Over €200,000 euro has been spent by our two local authorities tackling invasive species.
A report from TheJournal.ie outlines the €8.5million spend by county councils across the country dealing with plants and animals that are not native to Ireland between 2020 and 2024.
It says just over €129,000 was spent in Kilkenny with Carlow counterparts shelling out close to €84,000.
Author of the piece Anthea Lacchia explains what kind of damage these species can cause; “Things like Giant Hogweed can burn the skin and have a really long lasting damage for human health and then they can also of course damage the economy as we’ve found so in Ireland it’s estimated that they cost the economy of the island of Ireland €261million a year”.
