Ireland should follow Spain in lowering drink driving limits.
That’s according to Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú who says testing for drink driving in the Carlow, Kilkenny and Waterford districts by Gardai has remained relatively static with a marginal increase.
The number of checkpoints carrying out breathalyzer tests increased by 5 from 749 towards the end of 2022 to 754 last year.
The Carlow based MEP says a lower drink driving limit is needed,
“Ireland should follow Spain’s lead in reducing our blood alcohol limit for drink driving from 0.5 grams per litre down to 0.2 grams per litre. Spain now has the same drink driving limit as Norway and Sweden, two of the safest countries in Europe in terms of road safety.”
“No one wants to be a kill joy but our road deaths are out of control and we need to take radical action to address it. No one should be drink driving this Christmas. It just isn’t worth it.”
