Motorist clocked travelling at 179km per hour on Carlow Kilkenny border

There are extra Gardaí and speed vans out on the roads again today.

It’s part of the latest bank holiday weekend campaign aimed at preventing road deaths across the country.

There’s a focus on drivers who are speeding, under the influence, using their phones or not wearing a seatbelt.

During the first three days of the operation, 88 people were arrested for drink or drug-driving, while more than 2,500 have been caught over the speed limit – including one clocked travelling 179km per hour near Paulstown.

Junior Transport Minister Seán Canney is also urging those behind the wheel to be mindful of other-road users.

Meanwhile, emergency services have been dealing with a crash locally this morning.
